The opening ceremony of the 2016 Rio de Janeiro Summer Olympics took place on the evening of Friday, August 5, 2016, in Rio’s Maracanã Stadium.  As mandated by the Olympic Charter, the proceedings combined the formal ceremonial opening of this international sporting event with an artistic spectacle to showcase the host nation's culture and history.
